A novel photonic integration technology based on photonic crystals has recently enabled the fabrication of various photonic devices with a footprint of an order of μm and a consumption energy of an order of fJ/bit. With this technology, it will be possible to densely integrate many photonic devices with various functions in a single chip. We believe that this technology is promising for introducing a dense photonic network in a microchip processor, which paves the way to green information and communication technology (ICT) with ultralarge-capacity and small-energy consumption.
