Graphene, a unit layer of graphite, is now widely and progressively being studied due to its novel physical properties. At the same time, other layered materials having stacking structures that are similar to graphene are also attracting much attention. Like graphene, the new properties of their single-layer flakes are actively being investigated. Additionally, device fabrication is also being studied, using single-crystalline films of semiconducting layered materials, which have a finite band-gap unlike graphene. In this article, the authors introduce different kinds, properties and methods of thin film preparation of layered chalcogenide materials. Our recent studies on the fabrication of field-effect transistors are also presented.
