Abstract

“Micro Solid-State Photonics”, based on micro-domain controlled materials, such as transparent polycrystalline ceramics and periodically poled ferro-electric devices, enhances optical effects for the creation of new functions. This effect may be enhanced by a micro-cavity or a periodic structure. These micro and/or microchip lasers attained by using advanced ceramics can provide extreme performance as a new generation of solid-state lasers. Up to >1 MW peak power giant-pulse was obtained from a micro-laser by using Nd:YAG/Cr:YAG ceramics. Afterwards, the “world’s first laser ignited gasoline engine vehicle” was demonstrated using this laser. Additionally, we have developed new models for the micro-domain control process of anisotropic laser ceramics, such as RE:FAP, with regard to the 4f-electrons of doped RE3+-ion.
