Clean energy, solar cells and photovoltaics

Abstract

In order to understand photovoltaic power generation (Photovoltaics, PV) as a clean energy source, first, the CO₂ reduction effect of PV, and how to express the manufacturing cost and power generation cost of solar cells, are summarized. Next, the current status and technological trends of Si solar cells, which occupy 95 % of the market, and solar cells other than Si are described. The concept of “tandem solar cells”, which will be absolutely necessary for higher efficiency in the future will also be introduced. Finally, based on a future image of a PV society, the issues for realization will be described.
