Abstract

This paper proposed methods to elicit cognitive competencies for disaster nursing from the result of content analysis of interview data. One method focuses on cognitive process in disaster nursing activities from the view point of the transitions among the primitive cognitive steps: "Information (perception)", "Decision Making", and "Action Execution". The other method is based on a natural language processing technique and focuses on subjects in perception. Both methods visualize the analysis results and could help the analysts to find patterns and characteristics behind them. These methods were applied to the results of content analysis of the interviews with nurses who exhibited high performance in actual earthquake disasters. Some patterns and characteristics in the transitions of cognitive steps specific to disaster nursing tasks were observed. Also the visualization of the nouns in the "Information" category referred in an interview revealed to some extent attention or concerns of the nurse under the disaster situation. These methods are expected to contribute to the study of cognitive human factors for disaster nursing.
