Abstract
Tochigi City in Japan is left with many traditional buildings, which form the historic townscape. The 2011 off the pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake on March 11, 2011 and subsequent aftershocks caused damage to many of these traditional buildings. Only few data are available on seismic performance of these buildings at present. Therefore, in this paper, the researchers conducted study and survey relevant for these buildings. The following activities were taken place.
1. Collecting and analyzing seismic records observed around the area concerned as well as evaluating input motion characteristics for the subject area.
2. Field survey was conducted to understand the damage situation caused by series of earthquakes. Then consider the relationship between the damage trends and the various influencing factors.
3. Vibration measurements were performed on traditional buildings in the subject area, and comprehend the vibration characteristics of traditional buildings.
