Abstract
This research note will analyze to what extent and with what content major Japanese newspapers reported on Japanese athletes who participated in recent Deaflympics, from the following perspectives; (1) the degree and condition of the athletes’ hearing impairment, (2) the degree and manner in which the athletes experience difficulties in their daily lives due to their hearing impairment, (3) the difficulties athletes with hearing impairment experience when training and competing with hearing people, (4) the ingenuity and skill with which the athletes overcome difficulties they experience in sports due to their hearing impairment, (5) the amount of public visibility of the athletes and the athletes’ views on their visibility, (6) how the athletes and members of the media communicate with each other, and (7) changes in the athletes’ awareness that occurred as a result of their participation in the Deaflympics.
