In this study, based on the Orem-Underwood self-care model of nursing, we reviewed the research papers on actual conditions and issues of nursing intervention in self-care to promote community living among patients with mental disorders. Although many studies had been done on self-care to promote community living for the mentally ill, only a few research papers focused on nursing intervention in self-care using the Orem-Underwood self-care model. Ten such papers were done in Japan and some in other countries as well. All the studies indicate that promoting community living for the mentally ill requires intervention in self-care behaviors to “create a foundation for living,” “manage the life,” and “enhance the quality of life.” All areimportant. In addition, the PAS-SCT(Psychoanalytic Systems SelfCareTherapy)approach, which is involved in the intentional process of self-care by intervening in personality functions, indicated the possibility of self-care nursing intervention for prevention of longterm admission among patients with mental disorders. In addition, a questionnaire for measuring self-care of psychiatric patients has been developed, but there have been no tools for measuring self-care nursing intervention techniques. It is suggested that in the future it is necessary to clarify self-care nursing intervention theories and techniques according to the characteristics of psychiatric patients.
