Abstract
Air particulate matter (PM), mainly PM2.5, is suspected to cause some diseases in human body due to the presence of many toxic substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), nitrated PAHs, chlorinated PAHs, etc. To remove PAHs in PM in air, we have been studying photocatalytic degradation of PAHs using TiO2. It was so far confirmed that PAHs in PM are stable even TiO2 and light are applied and thus separation of PAHs from the particles is necessary for this purpose. In this study, on assumption that separation of PAHs is conducted, we examined photocatalytic degradation of pyrene, fluoranthene and benzo [a] pyrene on TiO2 thin film coated on a glass plate. Degradation rates for PAHs with different molecular structure were compared. Furthermore information about degradation products and residues remained on TiO2 thin film was also obtained.
