Abstract
A novel fabrication process for porous alumina-based ceramics was developed using alumina-based hydraulic inorganic binder and water. This binder and water acted as agents for direct consolidation, and water acted as a fugitive material to create open pores too. The green bodies formed with this binder and water had low green densities and high compressive strength. The porosity of the sintered alumina-based ceramics could be adjusted with the content of water in the starting mixture. The results of evolved gas analysis-mass spectrometry measurements showed the emissions from the fabrication process of the porous alumina-based ceramics to be environmentally safe.
