Abstract
Thermal shock fracture test using an infrared radiation heating (IRH) technique was performed on porous silicon carbide ceramics, which have various porosities (40-80vol%) and pore sizes (5-30 micrometer). Porous silicon carbide is used as DPF material. In an actual application, it is exposed in high thermal stress condition. And the heating-up time is not so fast. The effect of thermal conductivity should be considered in such condition. IRH method is appropriate method to consider that effect. The thermal shock strength, RSUB1c/SUB, of these materials were estimated experimentally and theoretically. It was possible to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between thermal shock resistance and microstructure of porous ceramics using RSUB1c/SUB. Thermal shock strength, RSUB1c/SUB, was decreased with the increase in porosity and pore size, and it was strongly dependent on the pore size.
