Abstract
Induced surface charges of electrically poled hydroxyapatite (HA) ceramics were demonstrated to enhance the osteoconductivity in defects of canine diaphyses. The layered bone formation in direct contact with the negatively charged surfaces suggested that the negative charges enhanced the osteobonding ability of the HA ceramics. In the vicinity of the positively charged surface, the formation of bones derived from osteoids entirely occupied the defects between the HA and bone at 7 days. Electrovectrial effects induced by poling considerably cooperated with the innate HA bioactivity and reconstructed the wide bone defects promptly, whereas the bone formation processes varied according to charge polarity.
