Abstract
Structure control of interfaces in the nano-scale includes the control of interface type, either rough or faceted, and the control of the distribution of lattice defects (twins and dislocations) and any second phase, in particular, liquid. This paper reviews and describes the microstructure developments during sintering of titanates (BaTiO3 and SrTiO3) with controlled interface structure. For BaTiO3, the effect of grain boundary structure and twins on densification and grain growth is described. For SrTiO3, effects of dislocations and liquid distribution on grain growth are presented. These results should demonstrate the principles of microstructure control through modification of interface structure and introduction of lattice defects and a liquid phase.
