Abstract
Si3N4-based Nano/nano-type composites having high wear resistance and machinability were successfully fabricated by the combination of a mechano-chemical grinding (MCG) method and a short time sintering process. Powder mixtures of ceramics and metal were prepared using the MCG process and the resulting nanocomposite powder mixtures were consolidated using pulsed electric current sintering (PECS). The obtained material consisted of matrix grains with a size of less than 100nm and nanometer size self-lubricant dispersions. It showed a low friction coefficient and high wear resistance due to a fine microstructure and self-lubricant particles. Also, the obtained material can be precisely processed by electrical discharge machining.
