Abstract
Recent development of internet telecommunication demands higher transmission capacity via additional implementation of WDM channels. This requires the development of broad band fiber-optic amplifiers in addition to the commercially available Er-doped fiber amplifiers. Recently, it was reported that Ho3+ ion doped into ether fluoride or sulfide glass could become a promising active ion for U-band fiber-optic amplifiers. From the viewpoint of a vibrational energy of host, chalcohalide glasses offer interests. We will report spectroscopic properties of Ho3+ in chalcohalide glasses in comparison with other glasses reported previously. As CsBr concentration in sulfide glass increased up to 10mol%, the lifetime of the Ho3+: 5I5 level increased to approximately four times longer than that from sulfide glass. Optimization of spectroscopic properties and potentials of Ho3+-doped chalcohalide glasses for U-band fiber-optic amplifiers will be presented.
