Development of Ultla-compact waveguide for optical amplifier

Abstract

We have developed an ultra-compact waveguide applicable to optical amplifier for metropolitan network. A 1-cm²-size spiral Er-doped waveguide chip having gain values of > 15 dB and output powers of > 12 dBm at whole C-band is realized. The waveguide is fabricated by deposition and dry-etching by using multicomponent bismuthate glass. We compare gain characteristics pumped at 1480 nm and at 980 nm.
