Abstract
In this study, mullite precursor was synthesized by alkoxide hydrolysis method, and its morphological change with heat-treatment was investigated. Furthermore, characteristics of mullite precursor with/without heat-treatment were evaluated. Mullite precursor synthesized in this study consisted of nano-scaled amorphous particles, and its morphology was fibrous due to the anisotropic growth by the aggregation of nano-scaled amorphous particles. The crystallization and grain growth of nano-scaled particles in mullite precursor proceeded during heat-treatment as maintaining fibrous morphology. Fibrous polycrystalline mullite powder with a unique morphology could be obtained after heat-treatment at higher temperature than 1300oC.
