Abstract

Structure-controlled and crystal-oriented magnetostrictive SmFe2 was synthesized by unidirectional solidification of Sm-7Fe in microgravity of 10-3g for 1.43s. The product was composed of sheet-dendrite of SmFe2 sandwiched between Fe-rich layers and was oriented toward <111> along cooling direction. The magnetostriction of product to the cooling (solidification) direction was 3200ppm.
