Abstract
Porous bioactive ceramics are widely used as bone fillers. Mechanical strength measurement under simulated body environment could be important to understand the nature of the implant materials. In the present study, compressive strengths of the bioactive ceramics from different companies were measured under various soaking condition in phosphate buffered saline (PBS), and compare the measurement conditions to decide fair standard method for compressive strength test. Many specimens showed a trend of decreasing in compressive strength more than 10% by soaking. Further, one specimen after soaking for 24 h showed significant decreasing. Thus, soaking in PBS for 24 h could be recommended conditions for initial strength of bioactive ceramics in use.
