Abstract
Impact tests with SUJ2 projectile (4mm,velocity 320-340 m/sec) on various kinds of ceramics were studied. In the impact tests SUJ2 projectiles were broken and cone and radial cracks were created in ceramics. The results showed that cone crack volume of low fracture toughness ceramics such as boron carbide and mullite was larger than that of high fracture toughness ceramics such as silicon nitride and zirconia. It is suggested that the failure of the high fracture toughness ceramics is smaller than that of the low fracture toughness and the low fracture toughness ceramics consume more kinetic energy of projectile than the high fracture toughness ceramics by impact fracture.
