Abstract
The degradation of the performance of materials, devices or structures are often resulted from the application of mechanical or thermal external loads. For understanding the mechanism, it is necessary to clarify both the mechanism of damage nucleation and degradation mechanism due to damages. Therefore, the characterization of damage is indispensable. The author has investigated the damage characterization based on acoustic emission (AE) technique. The nucleation time, location and mode of individual damage can be identified by AE technique. The application examples to bioceramics for implants, thermal shock fracture, and solar cell components will be demonstrated.
