Solution growth of polycrystalline AlN with supplying Mg in vapor phase

Abstract

We performed solution growth of polycrystalline AlN by supplying nitrogen gas over Al melt. In this study, in order to enhance the reaction between Al and N gas, Mg gas was simultaneously supplied by Ar carrier gas. In this case, Mg probably changed to Mg3N2 and then this compound reacted with Al melt. We obtained AlN single phase. It is important for Mg vapor to react with nitrogen just above the Al melt.
