Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the clinical features of eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) among subjects undergoing esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) during medical checkups.

Methods: All subjects undergoing EGD from April 2024 to March 2025 were included. The prevalence of EoE was evaluated. To analyze the risk of EoE, four age and sex-matched normal controls were randomly selected for each EoE case.

Results: Among 11,176 subjects, 38 (0.34%) were diagnosed with EoE. Prevalence of EoE was higher in male (0.43%) than female (0.14%), and in those aged in their 40's and 50's (0.40% and 0.47%, respectively). Allergic diseases and peripheral eosinophilia increased the risk of EoE. Ratio of H. pylori infection was similar in EoE cases and controls.

Conclusion: Prevalence of EoE is 0.34% in the general Japanese population. H. pylori infection, which reportedly reduces the risk of EoE according to previous studies, was not associated in our study.
