Abstract
Soil education in high school “Advanced Geography” has been revised since 2022. Before revision, Pedological Society of Japan submitted the proposal on soil education to Ministry of Education and the publishing companies to recommend (1) removal of undefined “tundra soil”, revisions of soil map that has overestimated distribution of Podzol and Latosol, (2) simplification of several black soils (Chernozem, Prairie soil, and Pampa soil) into Chernozem, (3) revision of laterite to Ferralsol (or Latosol), (4) introduction of Luvisol including terra rossa and terra roxa soils, and (5) introduction of Andosol and Fluvisol for intrazonal soil. Regarding these points, we compared major three textbooks that have been published before and after the revision in 2022. (1) Revision of soil map and (4) introduction of Luvisol have not been achieved so far by all publishers, but all publishers have reflected the other requests. Novel modification in the revised textbook is the introduction of Whittaker biome diagram that differed between subjects “Basic Biology” and “Advanced Geography”. Sharing updated information and filling knowledge gaps between disciplines are needed to improve soil education in high school Geography.
