Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to assess the effects of periodontal therapy superimposed with orthodontic therapy on gingival recession of malposed mandibular incisors in children aged 7-9 years.
The clinical examination included the Gingival Index (Löe & Silness 1963), probing depth (P. D.), width of keratinized gingiva (W. K. G.), width of attached gingiva (W. A. G.), tooth mobility, tooth position, type of frenal insertion and plaque control record (O'Leary et al.).
Gingival inflammation was controlled by professional plaque control and meticulous supragingival scaling. Active orthodontic therapy was carried out to correct the malposed lower incisors. During the correction period all the patients were recalled every month, enforced on their tooth cleaning method and reevaluated.
After 8-18 months of therapy, improvement in position and gingival health were obtained. Control of gingival inflammation during orthodontic therapy appears to be one of the most important factor in treatment of the gingival recession in mandibular incisors.
