Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evalute the effect of Estradiol-17β (E2) on periodontal disease. Before collecting Gingival Crevicular Fluid (GCF), a clinical periodontal examination (Pocket Depth, Gingival Index, Gingival Bleeding Index, Plaque Index) was performed on the upper anterior teeth of each patient. Seventy females who had periodontally involved teeth were used. In addition, the phase of menstrual cycle (menstrual phase, follicular phase, ovular phase, luteal phase) was asked on 18 periodontally involved patients and 5 females who had healthy gingivae.
The amount of GCF was determined with Periotron® by Lamster technique. The Periopaper® with GCF of each sample was used for the determination of E2. After extracting E2 with diethylether, it was assayed with E2 Direct Radioimmunoassay.
Therefore, the following results were obtained.
1. The amount of E2 showed a positive relation to the severity level of PD, GI and GBI.
2. The amount of E2 and the level of GI and GBI of the periodontally involved patients were increased in ovular and lutear phase, PD and P1I was also recognized no significant difference in each phase. However, the samples of healthy patients showed no significant difference in any clinical parameters.
