Abstract
This study was designed to investigate the immunohistochemical localization of chondroitin sulfate isomers (chondroitin-4 sulfate, -6 sulfate and dermatan sulfate) proteoglycans (PGs) in human healthy and inflammatory gingival tissue using monoclonal anti-bodies (2-B-6, 3-B-3).
As a result, the staining patterns of chondroitin-4 sulfate and dermatan sulfate PGs, that were found to be widespread in healthy connective tissue, were observed only weakly in destroyed inflammatory connective tissue.
Chondroitin-6 sulfate PG was found in peripheral blood vessels and at the junction between connec tive tissue and epithelium in healthy tissue, but these staining patterns were recognized only weakly in inflammatory tissue.
These findings suggest that chondroitin sulfate isomer PGs may be closely related to gingival im. flammation
