Abstract
This study was designed to investigate surgically induced, osseous defects in dogs following placement of lactic acid-co-glycolic acid membrane around the roots of the treated teeth and to compare the healing with that of control teeth without the membrane. Mandibular premolar teeth of 5 dogs were used for experimentation. Specimen blocks were removed 8 weeks postperatively for histological evaluation of contralateral experimental and control teeth.
The results were as follows:
1. Mean apical migration of junctional epithelium along the experimental surface amounted to 0.25mm as compared to 0.39mm for the control surface.
2. Mean formation of new cementum along the experimental surface amounted to 1.68mm as compared to 0.41mm for the control surface.
3. Mean fermation of new bone along the experimental surface amounted to 0.84mm as compared to 0.46mm for the control surface.
4. Neither ankylosis nor severe resportion were not observed on the experimental surface.
5. Lactic acid-co-glycolic acid membrane pracement was effectived in inhibiting epithelial migration and encouraging formation of new connective tissue attachment to the root surface.
