Abstract
This study estimated the effect of periodontal initial therapy in non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM). The diabetes mellitus (DM) group consisted of six NIDDM patients with peri-odontitis. The control group consisted of six systemically healthy patients with adult peri-odontitis. Before and after the periodontal initial therapy, O'Leary's plaque control record (PCR), probing depth and pocket reduction, and bleeding on probing were evaluated. After the therapy, signifi-cant improvements in all parameters were observed in both the DM and control group, whereas there was no significant difference in these parameters between the two groups. When means of pocket reduction in the sites showing 4-6 mm pocket depth at the initial examination were compared, a more significant reduction was observed in the DM group. The patients of the DM group were generally under good control by their internists. None had diabetic complications and the mean hemoglobin A1c value was 7. 6±1.3%. These results suggest that the effect of periodontal initial therapy in controlled NIDDM patients is not de-creased compared to patients with no systemic disease.
