Abstract

Cyclotriphosphazene derivatives with a mesogenic moiety having optically active alkyloxybiphnoxy groups, (s)-hexakis(4-(4'-(6-methyl)octyloxy)biphenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene(SMOCP) and (r)-hexakis(4- (4'-(1-methyl)heptyloxy) bi-phenoxy)cyclotriphosphazene(RMHCP) were synthesized. In RMHCP, no liquid crystalline phase was observed, but in SMOCP. an enantiotropic Sc* phase was observed. SMOCP has a spontaneous polarization(Ps) of -135.6 μCm-2 at 437.6 K using the triangular wave method. The Ps in SMOCP decreases with a decrease of cell thickness. This is due to an interface effect between SMOCP and the surface of the liquid crystalline cells that increases with a decrease of cell thickness.
