Abstract
Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) are widely distributed in Asia. However, as they do not have a striking geographical variation for their local populations to be regarded as sub-species (Fooden, 2000). The most discriminative character is the tail length; eastern, western, and southern grps., 30 %, 45 %, and 55% of head & body length, respectively. From its morphology and genetic properties, the southern grp. is considered to be hybrids with M. fascicularis, which is distributed parapatrically in zones of 15-20 degree North. We will report morphological characteristics in rhesuses inhabiting localities from Southern China to Bangladesh. Considerable geographical variation was found in tail length, pelage color and facial morphology.
