Abstract
Relation between beach erosion and protection of spawning site of loggerhead turtle Caretta caretta was investigated, taking the Hitotsuba coast in Miyazaki Prefecture as the example. This beach has beeneroded due to the causes; the formation of the wave shadow zone associated with extension of a long breakwater of Miyazaki Port and disruption of continuous longshore sand transport across the Hitotsuse river mouth by the extension of the jetty as well as dredging of navigation channels. A high scarp has been formed along the coastline, resulting in the difficulty in nesting of loggerheadturtle in one of the most famous nesting sites in Japan. Fundamental measures are required to alter the present situation.
