Abstract
Many rural areas in Japan face the problems like the population decreases, aging, and abandonment of the farmlands and woodlands. In order to cope with these problems and improve sustainability of the regions, we need take into account diverse rural ecosystem services upon which urban areas depend, and pursue a sound urban-rural relationship with broader and longer perspectives. This paper aims to develop a rural restoration planning method by adopting the scenario approach and apply the method to the river basin of Tokyo Metropolitan Area as a case study. Two types of rural restoration scenarios were designed to meet future changes in demands and conditions of the urban areas. Through the case study of zoning the rural areas in accordance with the scenarios, significance and effectiveness of the developed methods was examined, and future study was identified.
