Abstract
Beach changes of the Shiroturu-hama beach in western part of Amakusa Peninsula were investigated through field observation, analysis of aerial photographs and numerical evaluation using the bottom sounding. The results of this analysis are as follows; severe beach erosion occurred on the northern part of the coast, the breakwater of Takahama port forming shadow zone of the wave generated littoral current, and this current which eroded the sand of the northern beach and piled up in the south was a main cause of the beach erosion. From these results, as a countermeasure, construction of groin and beach nourishment plan was selected and executed. A monitoring study has been carried out to evaluate validity of the countermeasure.
