Abstract
A technique is presented for estimation of suspended fine sediment concentrations from backscatter intensity measured by acoustic Doppler current profiler. Suspended sediment concentrations are estimated from acoustic backscatter intensity recorded by 1200 kHz broadband acoustic Doppler current profiler mounted on a survey boat which is utilized for a field survey during one tidal cycle off Kumamoto port in the Ariake Bay. Acoustic estimates of suspended sediments are found to reasonably agree with profiles measured by an optical backscatterance sensor. Further application of the technique to estimate sediment transport rate through test section shows specific characteristics of suspended sediment transport system around the test field with temporal and spacial variations.
