Abstract
In this study, cutting tools with micro–three–dimensional–structured cutting surfaces were proposed to decrease the friction between tools and workpieces or chips. Then the tools having segment–structured diamond–like carbon (DLC) films were developed by plasma chemical vapor deposition method. The face milling experiments for aluminum alloy revealed that the cutting force became lower and the shear angle became larger, as compared with tools having conventional continuous DLC films. This demonstrated that the micro–three–dimensional structure brought low friction to cutting surface.
