Abstract
Applying the energy method to Merchant′s oblique cutting model, minimum cutting energy is calculated materially. The tendency of shear angle relation obtained through numerical computation corresponds to that of Lee–Shaffer′s type shear angle relation reported in previous paper. The shear angle relation showing separate curves depend on the normal rake angle moves upward from that of the orthogonal cutting as the increase of inclination angle of the cutting edge. To discuss the side curl of chip arising in large inclination angle of the cutting edge, nonuniformity in chip formation along the cutting edge, especially in both sides of the workpiece is considered. Using a quick–stopping device chip formation was frozen, and the chip flow direction and radius of side curl were examined. Calculated result agrees with experimental result.
