Abstract
As compounds of MRF–based slurry, iron particles push abrasive mixed with them against the target surface by magnetic force. This paper studies the effects of the distributions and the sizes of iron particles on the finishing characteristics. Iron particles with a narrow distribution hold the abrasives with high probability and reduce the unevenness of the magnetic force acting on the abrasive. As a result, they improve the finishing efficiency, achieving a finished surface with uniform cutting marks. The reduction of the iron particle sizes decrease not only magnetic force but also the size of the abrasive held between the iron particles. This reduces the depth of the cut, leading to finer finishing.
