Abstract
This paper proposes to apply active magnetic bearing (AMB) for developing compact, multi-axis, high-accuracy and low-cost gyroscopic sensors. Gyroscopic sensors are classified into various types according to the principle of operation. In low-cost applications, vibrating gyros are mostly used. However their detection sensitivity is low so that they are not suitable for high-performance applications. In this research, AMB was applied to rotating gyros whose detection sensitivity is higher than vibrating gyros. In the proposed sensor, angular velocities about two axes are estimated in same time from the control signals stabilizing rotational motions of the rotor about two axes. Acceleration can be estimated in addition to angular velocity from control signals stabilizing translation motions. Therefore, it works as two-axis gyroscopic sensor and three-axis servo-type accelerometer. In order to investigate its feasibility, two-axis angular velocity measurement and acceleration measurement are carried out with a conventional size AMB.
