Abstract
In order to wear spectacles comfortably, it should be secured at an appropriate position on the head so as to minimize any sensation of discomfort. For smooth fitting, the frame must be designed by taking in account the mechanical characteristics. Metal frames are usually made by titanium, but gum-metal is recently developed which has combined low young's modulus and high intensity. In this study, we attempted to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of marketed gum-metal frames by three dimensional form measurements and finite element method (FEM) analysis. We demonstrate that the gum-metal frames are more comfortable to wear than frames made from conventional metal.
