Abstract
In order to examine the effect of coolant′s oxidation potential on the lapping characteristics of difficult-to-machine material, S45C, SUS304 and Inconel713 were lapped by using a near-water with positive oxidation potential. The water-soluble coolant inflicted a severe adhesion of cutting chips onto the cutting edge. Using a near-water with positive oxidation potential much relieved the reaction between cutting chips and cutting edge. The lapping with near-water showed an excellent abrasive ability and Inconel713 showed a similar finishing surface as those of S45C and SUS304. However, the positive oxidation potential of near-water caused a rust formation on the surface of S45C. These facts indicate that the coolant with positive oxidation potential would have an excellent performance in the machining of difficult-to-machine materials, because it can prevent the adhesion of cutting chips onto the cutting edge.
