Evaluation of Wire Movement in Fine Wire EDM by High-speed Observation

Abstract

The wire movement in fine wire EDM using thin wire would affect the machining shape accuracy but it has not yet been made clear sufficiently. In this study, the movements of wire electrode are directly observed by using a high-speed video camera in order to clarify the wire vibration in fine wire EDM. Experimental results showed that the wire behavior depended mainly on the wire tension and discharge frequency, and it was almost 1st order mode string vibration.
