Digitalization is a promising approach to achieving circular economy (CE) by reducing the losses of, e.g., collection systems and recycling processes. This paper discusses the foundations and methodological approaches of System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) to support a digitalized CE. A literature review of the concept of SoS and some relevant methods, including a process-oriented framework for conceptualizing SoS in a life cycle engineering context, is presented. An illustrative example is demonstrated in order to show the possibility of an SoSE approach to enhancing a digitalized CE for lithium-ion battery applications.
