An in-process monitoring method for carbon scum accumulation in water-soluble machining fluids is proposed. It was found that the accumulation of carbon scum in the machining fluid above a certain level affects the machinability of the cutting edge. It was also clarified that the accumulation of carbon scum can be predicted by continuously monitoring the relationship between the amount of material removed and the power consumption by the spindle. The specific consumed energy (SCE) was tended to reduce with the carbon-scum concentration and often showed an outlier.
