Abstract

A generating method of work pieces of bars or holes having regular polygonal cross section shapes with filleted corners is proposed based on an application of the gear meshing theory. To carry out the generating method, a calculation scheme is derived to obtain the cross section shapes of tools as a conjugate of target works by considering a target shape as one of a pair of skew gears. By introducing a crossing angle between axes of rotation of the work and tool, a relative axial velocity which contributes to make a skiving machining happens does occur. In this paper, we described essential coordinate frames, variables, and equations to obtain the conjugate tooth profile by choosing a specific portion of a target work’s shape which can be found repeatedly.
