Abstract

The importance of the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) as a laboratory animal in biomedical research continues to grow, as does the need for appropriate treatment of the various health problems they exhibit in captivity. Due to their small body size and rapid metabolism, the time spent making treatment decisions can be critical.

This article, drawing on 15 years of case experience at Kyoto University, outlines the management and treatment of common clinical problems in captive marmosets such as anorexia, diarrhea, constipation, vomiting, and respiratory, oral, and injury-related issues. Initial emergency care is also described. Our practical and concise treatment manual would be useful to veterinarians and caregivers when faced with these problems in their colonies.
