A Japanese language translation, of a theoretically based personality test called the Emotions Profile Index (EPI), was administered to 500 male and 500 female university students in Japan. The major differences between Japanese and American students, appeared on 3 of the 9 scales of the EPI. It appeared that the Japanese students were less impulsive, and more depressed and timid than their American counterparts. When Japanese male and female students were compared, there was no significant difference. The EPI may become a useful tool for the crosscultural research of emotion in future.
