The parameters were US intensity and CS-US pattern. 2. Ss were 161 male albino rats. They were alotted to 15 groups which consisted of.2, .4, and .6mA. A.C. electrical stimulation (US intensity), and 5 CS-US patterns. The length of the US was 10 sec. and that of the CS was 3 sec. for all groups. 3. After the pretraining on bar-pressing, in which the criterion was 20 responses in 3 min. (11 animals were discarded in this stage), Ss received 20 reinforcements a day in the Skinner box under approximately 23 hrs. hunger drive. Thirty minutes following this Skinner box training, all Ss received 1 CS-US pairing in the shock box. This training, which consisted of bar-pressing and CS-US presentation, lasted for 5 days. On the 6th day, after 5 min. of free-responding, the CS (but not the US) appeared upon S's pressing the bar. Several analyses of variance and t-tests were used for examining the degree of the depressant effect on bar-pressing rate. 4. The results showed, in general, that both US intensity and CS-US pattern were positively related to CER. The analysis of variance also indicated an interaction between US intensity and CS-US pattern. From observation of the graphs, it is evident that this is the result of no relation between US intensity on CER in the backward conditioning groups, but pronounced effects of US intensity on CER for the other groups. The positive effect of the backward CS was not seen.
