6. Manufacturing Technology and Quality Engineering

Abstract

In order to increase market share, the most important strategy is to set the price at competitive level. How to reduce production cost without affecting the quality of the product is the role of manufacturing engineers. In this article, the methods are explained with two actual case studies. Both cases were conducted at laboratory before manufacturing process design using either test pieces or small scale experimental facility such as flask and resulted more than ten times improvement in manufacturing speed to give the scale of production facility less than one-tenth as that was expected. The most important role of Quality Engineering is to improve uniformity of manufacturing variation without actual production processes.
