Abstract

It is a matter of common knowledge that curvature is produced along weld line as well as angular distorsion of plate in welded V joint, but the cause of former deformation is not yet wholly illustrated.
Author proposes a theory investigating this by energy method. Fxperiments are made about stiffened plates to determinee strain energy which varies in accordance with angular distorsion, and the results in Fig. 7 are obtained. Using three variables A, B and H to demonstrate the deformation, equation (47) is induced to calculate angular distorsion, of welded plate without restraint and appoximate value of B contenting this equation can be found in Fig. 7. Then A and H are calculated from equations (43) and (48), consequently the shape of deformation is determined.
As the result, the bending is explained to grow with residual stresies perpendicular to weld, and the necessity to reduce such stresses is emphasized.
